Theatre Alibi

Ali co-founded Theatre Alibi with Tim Spice in 1982 and was its Co-Artistic Director until 1990.

The Guardian described it as “among Britain’s most inventive theatre companies”.

She directed, co-devised and performed in over twenty original shows, and introduced the company to international collaborations with Gardzienice Theatre Association and many other practitioners and companies.

Some of the key shows of this period were:

Telling Tales (1982)
Lives Worth Living (1984)
In My Mother’s Shoes (1986)
No Cowards No Heroes (1987)
Stamping, Shouting, Singing Home (1988)
Song Stories (1990)

With its roots in story-telling and physical theatre, Theatre Alibi has gone on to become one of Britain’s longest-lived regional theatre companies, having played to tens of thousands of adults and children.

It was a legacy of which Ali was fiercely proud.
